Cave: a new immersive facility to support scientific research
On Monday, May 25, at the Faculty of Architecture in in the Valle Giulia neighbourhood, the immersive CAVE space (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) was inaugurated today, unique of its kind among the university’s facilities.
The project involved converting the Faculty’s Next Theatre hall into a multimedia infrastructure that enables the development and sharing of research and scientific outreach activities in an immersive and interactive format.
The CAVE environment is equipped with advanced technologies that allow researchers from different disciplines to work simultaneously on the same object, collaborating through three-dimensional models, point clouds, 360° videos, digital reconstructions, and high-resolution images. This innovative space, serving the academic community, plays a strategic role in encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue and fostering interaction between research and digital technology.
The installation, designed and created by ETT — the creative digital industry company of Dedagroup selected by Sapienza University of Rome — as part of the Extended Partnership PE05 – CHANGES Spoke 8 funded by the PNRR, consists of a room enclosed by three high-performance LED walls. The structure surrounds the user through a trapezoidal arrangement of the screens and an audio system that projects sound in every direction.
