On Wednesday, May 6, at 12:00 p.m., the Sapienza Microforest will be inaugurated in the garden area between the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Covering approximately 150 square metres, the project includes the planting of 300 trees and shrubs native to Mediterranean scrubland, creating an ecological and educational space for the university community.

The Eco-educational Microforests project was launched with funding from a 2021 Terza Missione Sapienza call for proposals, leading to the creation of the first neighbourhood afforestation initiative of its kind at Parco dei Caduti in San Lorenzo. Owing to its innovative approach, distinctive features, and alignment with the principles of the 2030 Agenda, the San Lorenzo microforest was also highlighted in an article published in the first issue of Sapienza Magazine.

The project is one of 36 case studies submitted for the 2020–2024 Research Quality Assessment conducted by ANVUR.

Building on the success of this pilot initiative, in 2024 Roma Capitale formalised a collaboration agreement with the Department of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering to establish a microforest in each borough, as part of the Programma di Rigenerazione Urbana 15 progetti per la città dei 15 minuti.

Between 2024 and 2025, five microforests have already been created across several boroughs of the capital, involving local schools, sixth-form colleges and community associations. Additional projects are currently under development, including one already completed in Montespaccato district.
