Inauguration of a New Professorship Dedicated to Inter-religious Dialogue and Peaceful Coexistence
On Monday, November 5 (11:00 am), a ceremony will be held at Sapienza University to inaugurate the new “King Hamad Chair for Inter-religious Dialogue and Peaceful Co-existence” professorship. The ceremony will be opened by Sapienza Rector Eugenio Gaudioand the Hereditary Prince of Bahrain, Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, on behalf of King Ḥamad bin ʿĪsā Āl Khalīfa.
The introductory presentation will be held by the President of Fondazione Sapienza, Antonello Folco Biagini, while Alessandro Saggioro, appointed to the new professorship, will hold a lectio magistralison “The History of Religions, Religious Freedoms and Peaceful Co-existence.” Moreover, a delegation of students from the “History, Anthropology, Religions” Bachelors Degree Programme and the Masters Programme in “Historical Religions” will also participate.
The new professorship aims to involve the new generations with a greater understanding of the relations between cultures and religions as an antidote to extremism and radicalism. In a recent declaration, his Majesty the King of Bahrain declared: “Ignorance is the enemy of peace and it is therefore our duty to learn, share and live together.” The analysis is based on a reflection on the history of his country: “In the Kingdom of Bahrain, all cultures and faiths have lived side by side for centuries and today we are happy to live in a multicultural and multi-religious society. We recognise this diversity as a natural fact of everyday life in our country.”
“These reflections are consonant with the comparative and historical dimension of religious studies, an area that has a long and prestigious history at our university,” pointed out Rector Eugenio Gaudio. “The common intent of educating and promoting knowledge will be the fil rougefor activities at the new professorship which will feature degrees at the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate levels, the first in Italy.”
The event is organized by Fondazione Sapienza and Sapienza University.
