Joint Thesis Supervision
Joint PhD theses allow doctoral students enrolled at Sapienza or foreign universities, to complete their doctoral dissertation by alternating periods at their home and host university abroad.
In this case, thesis work is supervised by two thesis directors: one at Sapienza, and one at the partner university. The thesis will be discussed at only one university and following its successful evaluation the two universities will present the student with a double PhD Degree.
Activating Thesis Co-Supervision
Thesis Co-Supervision is activated via agreements existing between university rectors, following their approval by university governance that also attests the availability of financial resources for the agreement.
Thesis Co-Supervision may be activated for 1st-year PhD students, as well as for 2nd-year students if particular scientific interest is proven. In this case, the PhD Commission will have to approve a one-year extension for the discussion of the final thesis, as the student will enrol in the first year at the foreign university. No other form of retroactive activation is admissible.
Each year, by October 31, the PhD Commission will evaluate student activity, including that of joint degree students at partner universities, to admit them to the next programme year. The PhD Commission may authorise that a thesis be written in English or in another European language.
Italian thesis directors may belong to other universities than Sapienza.
Three original copies of the agreement must be presented in Italian to Sapienza University and 3 in the relevant language to the partner university.
