Why become a bone marrow and haemopoietic stem cell donor?
Because some diseases can only be beaten by stem cell transplantation from a donor who is a match for the patient. Unfortunately, full compatibility within the family (between siblings) is only 1 in 4, and between non-siblings, 1 in 100,000.
That is why as many people as possible need to join the IBMDR register. It is a gesture of great solidarity that can really be worth a life. Transplantation can cure thalassaemia, leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and, in some cases, solid tumours and autoimmune diseases.
I want to donate: what now?
If you are between 18 and 35 years old, in good health and weigh over 50 kg, you can register with the IBMDR - Italian Bone Marrow Donor Registry. A sample of your saliva or blood will be taken, which is necessary to obtain your genetic data for inclusion in the Registry. You will have to fill in an anamnestic questionnaire and have an interview with a health professional to assess your good health. Finally, you will be given an informed consent form to sign.
Where can I register?
Start by filling in the online form you can find on these platforms (in Italian)
Complete your registration in one of the more than 250 donor centres and recruitment hubs located throughout the country.
I am registered: what now?
Your data will be kept in the IBMDR until you reach the age of 55. You will be available for an actual donation to a compatible patient awaiting a transplant during this period. If you are a match for someone looking for a donor, you will be contacted by the Donor Centre for further details.
