Sapienza is the first University in Italy in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, released on August 15 2022, by the independent organisation Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, ranking as the first and only Italian University in the 101-150 bracket.

Our University improved its position globally from last year by rising one notch in the standings from the 151-200 range to the 101-150 range. 

"This year's ranking is an excellent result for Sapienza," says Rector Antonella Polimeni, "which sees its national leadership confirmed. The ranking reaffirms our University's prestige on the international panorama thanks to our academic community's quality and scientific value, of which the recent Nobel Prize in Physics to Giorgio Parisi represents the highest recognition. The ranking rewards excellence in scientific research, placing Sapienza among the world's leading research universities".

Arwu considers the world's top 1,000 universities out of an estimated 2,500 worldwide. There are 6 assessment parameters: the Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals of former students (10%) or researchers at the individual University (20%), the number of highly cited researchers according to Clarivate Analytics (20%), publications in 'Nature & Science' (20%), citations of techno-social publications (20%). These parameters are then correlated with academic staff, giving an additional parameter of productivity per capita (10%). For the top 100 universities in the Shanghai ranking, the position and score according to the parameters used are explicit. The others are divided into groups of 50-100. Globally, the first place in the ranking has been occupied by Harvard University for 19 years, while Stanford University and the University of Cambridge hold the second and third positions, respectively.

2022 was a year of outstanding achievements for Sapienza in terms of international rankings. The 2022 rankings by subject areas of the QS agency, published on April 6, 2022, again placed Sapienza in 1st place worldwide in Classics & Ancient History. Sapienza is the only Italian University to boast an absolute first place at the international level. In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, published on July 19, 2022, by the same agency Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, our University scored 5 unique firsts at the national level in Mathematics, Physics, Automation&Control, Telecommunication Engineering and Aerospace Engineering.
