Sapienza is appalled by the Israeli military escalation and horrified by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza

On 13 May 13, 2025, Sapienza University's Academic Senate unanimously approved the following motion:

1. Following a wide-ranging and in-depth debate involving all the representative members of the university community, in the joint session of April 16, 2024, the Academic Senate and the Board of Governors expressed their commitment to 'Sapienza for peace and freedom in teaching and research'.  Our university joined the feelings of grief and horror aroused by the ongoing military escalation and humanitarian crisis in Palestine and reaffirmed its firm commitment to peace.

2. Today, the Academic Senate confirms this position, without distinction and with even greater firmness. Likewise, it reaffirms its support for the United Nations Security Council resolutions, starting with resolution 2728 of March 25, 2024, and the numerous calls for an immediate ceasefire, the entry of significant humanitarian aid into Gaza, the intensification of negotiations to free hostages, coordinated efforts to care for the wounded and sick, feed the population and find negotiated solutions that guarantee a lasting peace, based on the recognition of the right to exist for all the people living in the region.

3.Moreover, the Academic Senate reaffirms its condemnation of war and Sapienza's firm commitment to peace; expresses outrage at the Israeli military escalation in Gaza; highlights the intolerable number of civilian victims and the repeated violations of human rights and international law; expresses a growing sense of horror at the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in Palestine, a crisis that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees considers to be one of the worst experienced worldwide, with approximately 1.1 million people facing unsustainable levels of food deprivation; commits to continue its academic policy action, encouraging the implementation, in addition to the many already implemented, of further actions concretely in favour of the Palestinian population, starting with the academic communities, comprising all components of the University.
