A Child’s Smile: Sapienza and the “Operation Smile Italia Onlus” Foundation

A new Memorandum of Understanding was signed this morning by Sapienza University and “Operation Smile Italia Onlus,” a foundation working worldwide to cure children affected by facial deformations, to step up collaboration on institutional activities and specific projects

This morning, the Dean of the Sapienza Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Antonella Polimeni, and the President of the “Operation Smile Italia Onlus” Foundation, Carlo Salvatori, signed a new Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration on institutional activities and specific projects.

The three-year protocol addresses the development of educational and research activities in the field of cranial-maxillo-facial deformations in childhood and educational activities for doctors in countries with a low and medium-low income. More specifically, the agreement promotes the development of protocols for diagnosis, therapy and surgery, as well as programmes to support local medical resources and make them independent. The training of voluntary medical and health services personnel will address the field of maxillo-facial surgery, paediatric odontostomatology and dentistry, otolaryngology audiology and phoniatrics, ophthalmology and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The MoU involves the following departments of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry:

  • Department of Odontostomatological and Maxillo-Facial Science

  • “Pietro Valdoni” Department of Surgery

  • Department of Human Neuroscience

  • Department of Childhood, Maternity and Urological Science

  • Department of Sense Organs
