NG Detectors, the Innovative Sapienza Startup, Realizes a Device for the Rapid Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
Methods optimization and diagnosis time reduction are the main goals of biomedical research, which increasingly resorts to tools and knowledge borrowed from new digital technologies to offer products with unique and innovative features on the market.
This is NG Detectors’s achievement. The startup focuses its activity on the industrialization of GonioProbe, a new generation application for radio guided surgery based on the idea of the "Goniometric scintigraphic probe", invented by Roberto Pani, Professor of Medical Physics of Sapienza University of Rome and scientific director of the startup and patented by Sapienza.
The GonioProbe is a detection device for surgical use for fast and hyper-accurate identification of the "sentinel lymph nodes" in breast cancer staging procedures.
"The precise identification and removal of this lymph node - explains Roberto Pani - allows to diagnose the possible diffusion of metastases and accurately determine a personalized therapy. Our novel device is equipped with a technology capable of autonomously navigate the surgeon towards the target in a few seconds. In addition, thanks to the "lock on target" system, the device identifies the target with less than one millimeter accuracy. The device will improve the diagnostic reliability up to 95% , consistently increasing survival chances and drastically reducing collateral damage such as lymphedema".
Thanks to the innovative value of the projects and the technical, scientific and management skills of the team, NG Detectors has already received public and private fundings for 1,431,000 euros and was shortlisted in the 2016 "OneStart Europe" competition among the best forty startups in EU and Asia. This year brought a new goal. The startup, with the Sapienza GonioProbe patent, was among the nine finalists of the first edition of the Italian Patent Competition, a competition that aims to support excellence projects be able to enhance a patent in the Life Science and Digital fields.
"The experience of NG Detectors is an example of a research and development chain fully made-in-Sapienza, from the idea, to the patent, to the commercialization of the results. The technological and functional innovation - concludes Pani - will be the characteristics that will allow the startup to enter the market in a competitive fashion; the exclusive licensee, will allow us to maintain the technological gap for a sufficiently long time".
