
Sant'Andrea University Hospital: grand opening of the new Facility for Education and Research of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology
On Tuesday, July 14 the new facility for education and research of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology at the Sant'Andrea University Hospital, in Rome, Via di Grottarossa - a project by the Architect Paolo Desideri, Abrd Studio - has been inaugurated. Our Rector Eugenio Gaudio, the Minister of University and Research Gaetano Manfredi, and the Councillor for Health of the Lazio Region Alessio D'Amato were present at the ceremony. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended, among others, by the Director General Simonetta Ranalli and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology Fabio Lucidi.
The extension work of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology at the Sant'Andrea Hospital is one of the main interventions carried out for the building development and strategic reorganization of Sapienza. The new, modern and functional facility provides the physical location to train students of the Medicine and Healthcare Professions courses, belonging to the Departments of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, Medical-Surgical Sciences, Translational Medicine, and Neuroscience, Mental Health and Sensory Organs.
"This result has been reached thanks to the University's commitment - says Rector Eugenio Gaudio. Teamwork that has seen an important investment of resources and skills to offer a better service to our students, young people who are working hard to build the future of our country in such a delicate moment as this and a crucial field such as healthcare".
The approximately 7,000 square metres of covered surface area host 16 classrooms for a total of 1196 seats, 21 laboratories, a 94-seat multimedia classroom, 2 Educational Affairs Offices 3 skill labs, 2 coworking spaces for research, 10 departmental offices and 7 Dean's offices.
There are also several complementary environments (such as services, accessory rooms, technical volumes and support spaces for educational purposes), two large car parks (including one indoor car park) and 4,700 square meters of outdoor areas. The total cost of the work was 13 million euros, all of which was paid for by Sapienza.
Impact on the territory and energy sustainability were taken into account from the design to realization of the work, combining them with an architectural study and aesthetic research able to enhance the functionality of the spaces and the comfort of users.

Paolo Desideri, the architect who signed the new building, is the designer of important works in the public sphere, including the Rome Tiburtina railway station.
Part of the programme is the graduation ceremony of 44 new graduates of the Medicine and Surgery courses, followed by the Hippocratic Oath.
At the end, Minister Gaetano Manfredi conferred the Elisa Scarascia Mugnozza 2020 Award upon the winner of the scholarship named after the student of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology who died prematurely due to the tragic accident in Spain involving a group of Erasmus students; an event that has hit the university community and public opinion hard.
