Sapienza hosts the 25th World Congress of Philosophy: Philosophy across boundaries / La filosofia attraversa i confini
From August 1 to 8, Sapienza and the city of Rome will be hosting the 25th World Congress of Philosophy, organised by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), the Società filosofica italiana (SFI) and Sapienza University of Rome, with the general theme Philosophy across Boundaries / La filosofia attraversa i confini. Over 5000 participants are expected to attend the event.
Since the symposium held in Paris in 1900 on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition, the World Congress of Philosophy has been held in Rome for the first time. For the fourth time, Italy is hosting the Congress - after those of Bologna in 1911, Naples in 1924 and Venice in 1958 - the only country in the world to boast this record, a clear sign of the recognition by the international philosophical community of the importance of the contribution that Italy has made and can make within the global philosophical debate.
The Congress is not an exclusively academic meeting. It does not only discuss philosophy. The work of the Congress invests the entire public sphere, opening up to exponents from the worlds of science, economics, information, business, health, technology, and institutions; it compares ideas and traditions from all geographical areas; it breaks down rigid disciplinary barriers, looking at the complex interweaving of human civilisations from antiquity to the present day. The proposed theme is a challenge and an invitation to unite intellectual forces from all over the world to build new models of thought together, to overcome those borders, those barriers not only physical and geographical but also social, economic and cultural that hinder the peaceful coexistence of all.
Thousands of intellectuals, academics and young scholars from all over the world are gathering on Sapienza's campus, in a public moment of reflection, elaboration and proposals on the present and future prospects of our societies, with the aim of fostering a broad global reflection, which also aims at an ‘intellectual reconstruction’ of our societies, new cultural perspectives, new social and economic models.
"Philosophy across boundaries" offers a programme divided into 5 plenary sessions, 10 symposia, and 89 thematic sections, as well as hundreds of other appointments and meetings in addition to a Gramsci exhibition and a series of events realised in close collaboration with Roma Capitale (starting with the opening ceremony on the evening of August 1 at the Terme di Caracalla).
