Sapienza University awards Italy's first graduates in Italian Sign Language
Three years after Sapienza University launched Italy's first professional degree programme in Italian Sign Language Communication and Interpreting (LIS and LIST), the first six graduates to complete it have been announced.
Sapienza was the first Italian university to introduce, starting in the 2022-2023 academic year, a degree course that trains professional interpreters in Italian Sign Language and Italian Tactile Sign Language.
Based in the Department of Literature and Modern Culture, the programme provides a solid knowledge of the various dimensions of language sciences, from the linguistics of spoken and sign languages, to semiotics, the philosophy of language, legislation relating to disability, and the psychological and anthropological aspects of translation theories and techniques. All three years include practical learning of LIS, including tactile sign language. The second and third years also include internships and work placements.
Graduates will be qualified to work as interpreters and consultants in language and communication services in LIS and LIST.
