Sapienza University's Prison Campus launched

Sapienza University's prison campus has been launched. It delivers several services aimed at guaranteeing the right to study to inmates and people with restrictions on their personal freedom

The Academic Senate established the Sapienza University's Prison Campus on November 4, 2021. It delivers several services aimed at guaranteeing the right to study and awarding university degrees to inmates and people with restrictions on their personal freedom. Several key points have been established: target groups, support for managing administrative procedures, but also study orientation, specific teaching methods, the use of library materials and placement activities linked with the world of work.

"Our challenge is to make sure that detention is not a suspended time but a period of genuine preparation for re-entry into society, during which they can undertake high-level training courses to acquire or integrate their cultural knowledge," says Pasquale Bronzo, Rector's delegate for Sapienza University's Prison Campus.  "The presence of universities in correctional institutions has a profound cultural value for our country and inspires wider discussion on the meaning that punishment and penal enforcement may have".
