Sapienza wins R.I.Pr.E.I. funding on health emergencies to study the Sars-CoV-2 virus

Sapienza, together with the Biomedical Technology Institute of the CNR, has been awarded a 400,000 euro-grant to study how the Sars-CoV-2 virus enters the heart and the long-term effects of infection.

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità has funded a project presented by Sapienza, in collaboration with the CNR's Institute of Biomedical Technology, as part of the R.I.Pr.E.I. call for proposalsRete Italiana per la sorveglianza virologica, il monitoraggio immunologico, la formazione e la ricerca in Preparazione alla gestione delle Emergenze Infettive”.

The 9 most innovative research projects on the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been awarded. Sapienza's proposal, entitled Multifocal dynamic bioengineered 3D cardiac models to unveil the epigenetic remodelling of SARS-CoV-2 infection, aims precisely at clarifying the mechanisms of virus entry into the heart and the long-term effects of infection.

The 400,000-euro project will bring together two teams of researchers with expertise in regenerative medicine and epigenetics.

The Long-COVID will also be analysed by studying the long-term effects of infection on the genome of cardiac cells to understand how this virus triggers cardiac pathologies or aggravates pre-existing ones over time, even in the absence of the virus itself.
