Sumer and the Sea: Delta, Shoreline, and Urban Water Management in 3rd Millennium Mesopotamia
The workshop organised by the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, the European Centre for Upper Mesopotamian Studies, the University of Cambridge and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will take place from June 2 to 4. National and international experts involved in recent archaeological and geo-archaeological research in southern Mesopotamia will take part in the event, which will focus on the Sumerians' relationship with water and the sea. In particular, the new data, obtained through remote-sensing and geo-archaeological surveys, will allow them to discuss the evolution of the ancient coastline, whose progression over the centuries has profoundly altered the landscape and conditioned the life of the settlements of southern Mesopotamia
