Holy Sepulchre: Sapienza coordinates the excavation work

The Department of Ancient World Studies will be supervising the project from an archaeological and historical perspective

On Monday, March 14, with the official ceremony in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the archaeological excavation activities coordinated by the Department of Ancient World Studies began. This excavation is particularly complex and will be carried out continuously for over two and a half years, 24/7,  to allow the regular performance of religious services and the flow of pilgrims.

The archaeological activities, coordinated by Francesca Romana Stasolla of the Department of Ancient World Studies, will be carried out by an interdisciplinary team comprising archaeologists from the Department of Ancient World Studies, historians and art historians from the Department of History, Religions, Anthropology and Performing Arts, engineers from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and psychologists from the Department of Psychology of Developmental and Socialisation Processes.
