Italy's first Biochemistry graduates
October 20, 2023, saw its first graduates in the new inter-faculty Master's degree programme in Biochemistry activated at Sapienza University of Rome in 2021-2022.
The programme relates to the Department of Biochemical Sciences but has been developed jointly with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine and the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences.
The six new graduates - five female students and one male student - are the first Sapienza graduates, but also the first-ever graduates in Italy in Biochemistry, as the specialisation is now unique in the Italian academic landscape.
The international nature of the course, entirely in English, allowed three students in the group to gain pre-thesis experience abroad specifically at Stockholms Universitet, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The very high scientific level of the submitted theses was unanimously recognised by the degree committees. The topics of the final papers ranged from structural biochemistry to antibiotic resistance, proving that the biochemical approach is considered very important in all fields of biological, biotechnological, medical and pharmaceutical scientific research. Finally, four of these students decided to pursue their scientific and academic research by obtaining PhD scholarships, two at Sapienza, one in Stockholm and one in Rotterdam.
