Sapienza and the Italian Air Force Collaborate on Medical Professions of the Future

The objective of the collaboration is to train new medical professionals to counter infective risks from highly contagious diseases

On October 9, 2019, the Skills Lab, the simulation laboratory at the Sapienza Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, held an event aiming to provide new specialist competences in the field of medicine related to highly contagious situations caused by extremely infective diseases.

During the initiative, organized in collaboration by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine and the Health Service of the Italian Air Force, the “Aereonautica Militare.” The medical personnel from the Italian Air Force provided students at the Specialisation School in Emergency and Urgent Medicine with the theoretical and practical tools necessary to manage cases of highly contagious diseases at a first aid ward.

The practical exercises involved 16 students, divided into four rescue teams, who rotated through three training stations (preparation-dressing, advanced reanimation support, decontamination and unclothing) coordinated by personnel from the Air Force Health Service.

The event was opened by Antonella Polimeni, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Brigadier General Ferdinando Arganese, Coordinator of the Aeronautica Militare Bio-containment Unit, and Giuliano Bertazzoni, Simulation Laboratory Manager. Speakers included Colonel Marco Lastilla, infectious diseases expert in the Bio-containment sector, Lieutenant Adolfo Simonetti, Air Force Nurse, and Lieutenant Francesco Rosario Fiore, Bio-containment Group Manager.
