Educational goals

The Ph.D. in "School of Statistics" is divided into three curricula: ACTUARIAL SCIENCES It aims to train researchers with high scientific qualifications in A.S. The study and research activities include actuarial models for private insurance, pension provision, risk theory, reinsurance, solvency, risk economics and insurance, and mathematical finance. The curriculum is the only one in the current national offer of Doctoral Courses dedicated to the advanced research of Actuarial Sciences. The training offered is divided into: a) advanced institutional courses (basic) b) Thematic insights for research initiation (specialist) Ph.D. students are encouraged to spend a period of study and research abroad. Some destinations are ETH Zurich, Cass Business School London, Imperial College London, University of Lausanne, University of Waterloo, SCOR Zurich, and University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. DEMOGRAPHY It aims to train researchers and highly professional figures specific to studying population processes in Italy and abroad. The training activity enhances a multidisciplinary vision shared within the European Doctoral School of Demography without sacrificing a methodological base. It provides the conceptual and methodological tools necessary for studying the population, its dynamics, and the interrelations that link demographic behaviors with economic and social ones. STATISTICAL METHODOLOGY It aims to train highly professional figures in the management of statistical information in its various stages of production: design and execution of observational surveys and experiments, development of methodologies, and data analysis. The training offered is divided into the following: a) advanced institutional courses (general training) b) monographic courses (subject-related studies) c) Start-up research seminars The introduction to research is the primary objective of the three years. It is achieved by identifying a concrete and relevant methodological problem developed by the Ph.D. student with the supervision of internal and/ or external supervisors. It leads to original results and the compilation of the doctoral thesis. Ph.D. students are encouraged to spend periods of study abroad. Some examples are Harvard University, UCLA, Southampton University, King's College, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, and many others with which a profitable and stable exchange relationship has been established over the years. During the three years, the Ph.D. students of each curriculum are involved, with an active role, in the cultural initiatives organized by the Department of Statistical Sciences: seminars, study days, scientific meetings of research groups, workshops, and conferences, both national and international. Depending on their interests, they are included in the various research programs funded at University, national and international levels.
