The Historical Archive Unit, established in 2009, is responsible for safeguarding, protecting, enhancing and promoting Sapienza's historical documentary heritage in order to organise and offer a privileged environment for study and research.

In 2024, the Historical Archive recorded approximately 250 contacts and 80 users consulting the archives in person. A cooperation project with the Department of Letters and Modern Culture has been active since 2017. This collaboration has made it possible to map the various archives of the Central Administration, verifying their consistency and allowing the selection of documents for permanent preservation and those to be discarded, based on the Preservation Plan drawn up in 2022.
