Professor Dorian A. Lamis, invited by Prof. Maurizio Pompili, will be hosted by the Department of Neurosciences, Mental Health, and Sensory Organs. Professor Lamis will spend one month conducting research investigating risk and protective factors for suicide among individuals diagnosed with a variety of mental illnesses, with a particular focus on patients with bipolar disorder. One of the primary goals of this collaborative effort is to advance our understanding of suicidal behaviors in psychiatric patients through a cross-cultural lens. Professor Lamis will also hold several informative lectures and seminars on evidence-based suicide risk assessment/treatment and psychosocial intervention approaches addressing various related psychiatric disorders.

The COVID-19 pandemic situation has made central governments of countries across the world to implement lockdown measures that have caused business closures due to the downwards of the income and continued uncertainty affecting both the domestic and international tourism notably. It has had unprecedented negative consequences in the tourism sector, especially in the hotel industry. There is therefore a need for city governments to accelerate the recovery of the tourism industry, preparing tourism activities for a stronger, more sustainable and resilient tourism economy, within the new post-COVID-19 context.

These strategies require ongoing tourism service innovations grounded in the promotion of the digital transition of the hospitality industry, implementing new or improved ICT-enabled hospitality services with the use of disruptive technologies such as blockchain technologies (BCT). 

This way, our research will be focused on the analysis of the impact of the emerging technologies implementation into the hospitality industry, as well as its possible impact on the smart cities.

The main purpose of the visit is to work on a research project on the mechanisms of inclusion and control of Protestant foreigners in Italy from the end of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. At the center of this research is the theme of the "conversion" to Catholicism of foreigners who came from Northern Europe. In the early modern age, conversion was often a bureaucratic step that marked a desire to become Italian, which is why the investigation of this theme is intertwined with questions of religious acculturation and definitions of the elements that build cultural and religious identity in the early modern age.

Thanks to technological advances in the last decade ionosphere becomes a sensitive medium to various geophysical phenomena as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic explosions, revealing new possibilities to improve the monitoring and the risk estimation of natural hazards. Our objective today, in the collaboration between the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) and La Sapienza is to make operational all the recent methodologies of tsunami risk estimation based on ionospheric monitoring by GNSS measuring the total electron content (TEC). We already plan to apply the results of our collaboration to the IPGP observatories in the Caribbean to improve warning systems.

Prof. Cheng Yuning, Digital Laboratory’s Director of Landscape Architecture Department of Southeast University in Nanking, will collaborate with Prof. Edoardo Currà in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. During his visit he will work on digital tools for management of territories and environmental planning. The cooperation will focus particularly on two research programmes led by prof. Currà: the first one Be2secure (PRIN2017) based on digital tools and behavioural design for risk management and risk reduction in historical cities; and the second programme is on landscapes and industrial sites (Ateneo 2018 e Ateneo 2019). Prof. Karin Schillén will collaborate with Prof. Luciano Galantini at the Department of Chemistry, and will carry out physico-chemical studies on the co-assembly of block copolymers loaded in the opposite way and biosurfactants of bile salt. These copolymers will be interesting to use as sequestrants of the bile salt in the treatment of diseases related to bile acid and hypercholesterolemia. Her experimental skills are the diffusion of dynamic and static light, the diffusion of small-angle X-rays, calorimetric techniques and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy.

Prof. Luca Trevisan invited by prof. Nicola Galesi, will be teaching and researching on spectral clustering algorithms to find clusters in a given network by exploiting properties of the eigenvectors of matrices associated with the network. Such algorithms work so well that, in certain applications unrelated to network analysis, such as image segmentation, it is useful to associate a network to the data, and then apply spectral clustering to the network. In addition to its application to clustering, spectral embeddings are a valuable tool for dimension-reduction and data visualization.

Prof. Scott Morgenstern will work with Prof. Gianluca Passarelli on a project focused on how parties pertaining or supporting presidents differ from others.  They are collecting data about the geographical bases of such parties, as well as campaign platforms and electoral success.  They plan statistical analyses of “nationalization,” party platforms (using both textual analysis of manifestos and surveys of legislators), as well as qualitative analyses. The focus of the project will be Latin America, but they will also seek data on parties in other presidential systems, as in Africa and Eastern Europe.

Prof. Aydin, will collaborate with Prof. Maria Cristina Larciprete from the Department of Basic and Applied Sciences for Engineering Research will focus on anisotropic phononic materials that exhibit interesting thermal emission and photon absorption characteristics in the mid-infrared wavelength range. Samples to be investigated include phase transition materials such as VO2 and anisotropic materials like MoO3 and Ga2O3. The research will analyse the two-party personal touch of a poet divided between Neoplatonism and Savonarola's reform, by studying three different levels of his work: autobiographical, literary and philosophical. The analysis's main goal will be both the author's contribution to the spread of Platonism in the 15th century and, more importantly, the distinctive characteristics of a sub signo spiritual revitalisation of his early lyric poetry which remind us of Petrarca.

Prof. Koutsoyiannis, invited by Prof. Francesco Napolitano of the Department of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering, will carry out research activities aimed at developing a new hydroclimatic theory, which recognizes the intrinsic character of uncertainty in natural processes, using the advances in physics and mathematics in the twentieth century. This activity provides a solid theoretical basis that contrasts the currently prevailing myths for hydroclimatology, proposing a scientific framework of clear definitions, such as the notion of entropy and the principle of maximum entropy, as a tool for logical inference, understanding of natural phenomena and their effective modelling.

This major challenge will provide the opportunity to look for new innovative systems based on shared, connected and low emission logistic operations. Prof. Genz, invited by Professor Frances Pinnock of the Department of Ancient World Studies, will carry out research and teaching activities focusing in particular on the comparison and integration of data from northern Lebanon with those of the Ebla Project on internal central Syria; the research will focus on the problems of comparative stratigraphy, absolute chronology, petrography and characterization of archaeological materials, not only ceramic, and also regional historical trajectories, with particular attention to the processes of formation, crisis and regeneration of complex societies in the Levant during the third millennium BC.
