Sapienza Project WAVESCOPE Receives ERC Proof of Concept Grant

The grant, which finances technology transferral for projects that have already been awarded ERC funding, has been assigned to Stefan Wabnitz from the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications for his study on the application of optic beams for OR functional  imaging

Stefan Wabnitz, a Professor at the Sapienza Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications, has received a grant for Project WAVESCOPE from the ERC Proof of Concept (Erc-PoC) for its feasibility of research.

WAVESCOPE introduces the use of high-power, focused fibre optic beams for operating room functional  imaging. The project will develop a new device based on fibre optics to scan 3D samples with a micrometrical resolution and to prevent the dispersion of information and beam quality. This type of technology can be applied to a wide range of industrial field and, in particular, can lead to advances in the field of operating room pathological diagnostics in oncology through in-situ optic biopsies. The study is based on research conducted as part of the ERC-Advanced “STEMS” Project in which Prof. Wabnitz is the Principal Investigator.

ERC-PoC Grants were created by the European Research Council (ERC) to allow researchers who have already benefitted from a first grant to receive further financial support to promote the technological transferral of project results.

Recent Erc-PoC funding includes the thousandth funded project as part of the the Horizon 2020 Programme: a study by Miguel González Herráez from the University of Alcalá (Madrid) for his identification of seismic activity in remote ocean areas.
