Sapienza University at Maker Faire 2020 Digital Edition

From Thursday, December 10 to Sunday 13, the main European event on digital craftsmanship will take place: Maker Faire Rome 2020 digital edition. Sapienza University will be attending the event with numerous proposals, presented by the Dtc Lazio Centre of Excellence, the Saperi&CO Research and Service Centre and in collaboration with other universities and research centres.

Dtc Lazio, the centre of excellence coordinated by Sapienza University, promotes multidisciplinary technologies related to cultural heritage by bringing together universities and research centres. Dtc Lazio will present three inventions in collaboration with our University. In its virtual stand, Dtc Lazio will present an application developed by Cnr-Itabc, in collaboration with Sapienza and the University of Ferrara, able to virtually recreate an ancient landscape in 3D, from the Palaeolithic period in particular. The second proposal is based on laser scanners able to carry out digital surveys of large monumental complexes, and create three-dimensional models of them; in this specific case, the main character is the imperial residence of Villa Adriana thanks to the studies and research carried out by the team of the archaeologist Paolo Carafa of Sapienza.

The third project presented by Dtc Lazio, currently underway, is by the Institute of Sea Engineering (Cnr-Inm). It aims to offer a complete overview of the volcanic lake of Nemi, Lazio, Italy, with frontier technologies and underwater methodologies, able to measure and obtain the geo-referenced 3D of the volcanic caldera, view and census the human-made artefacts still present in the lake, integrate the big-data set obtained with the already existing information (Luce films, photos, archaeological finds, an extensive bibliography, etc.).  All this will be presented to the public through immersive/pervasive reality techniques.

Saperi&CO, the Sapienza research and services centre, an infrastructure created to promote excellence in applied research aimed at offering services to companies and external bodies according to a hub model, will attend again this year's Maker Faire in the “Universities” section with three talks, a workshop and two online stands and with numerous innovative projects involving students from our Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programmes.

Sense Risk, an invention aimed at preventing accidents at work, will also be presented at Maker Faire. The project consists in sensor-embedded garments which, through a smart sensor system, data analysis and cloud computing, allows the worker to be alerted at an early stage to situations of incipient danger due to exposure to physical, chemical and biological risks and to monitor the worker's physiological parameters, such as heart rate, respiratory rate, sweating and body temperature. Sense Risk is the result of a collaboration between Sapienza, the medical campus in Rome, the Sant'Anna school, the University of Pisa, the Don Gnocchi technology centre in Milan and Inail, the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work.
