1. Requirements and terms
A. If you are enrolled full-time in courses under Ministerial Decree 270/04 or Ministerial Decree 509/99, you must pass all exams within a period equal to three times the normal duration of the degree programme, unless otherwise specified in the Faculty's teaching regulations.
For instance:
- if you are enrolled in a three-year degree programme, you must pass all exams within a total of 9 years;
- if you are enrolled in a second level two-year degree programme, you must pass all exams within a total of 6 years.
Any years of interruption in your studies are not taken into account when calculating the deadline for obtaining your degree (Articles 28 and 29).
B. If you are enrolled part-time, the deadline for obtaining your degree is specified in Art. 30.
C. If you are enrolled in a programme under the “old system” (prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99), the deadlines set out in Art. 34 apply.
D. The deadlines set for obtaining a degree are extended:
- in the event of a transfer to another bachelor's degree programme (Article 6) or a change in the system (Article 31);
- if only the final exam is missing. In this case, it is not possible to apply for a transfer to part-time status (Article 30).
E. In the event of a transfer to part-time study (Article 30), the deadlines set for obtaining the qualification are recalculated.
2. Procedure in the event of exceeding the deadlines set for obtaining the degree
Once the deadlines for obtaining the degree have passed, the credits acquired may no longer be considered adequate for the qualification required by the degree programme attended.
In this case, you must submit a request for the assessment of your previous educational history in the terms specified on the page https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758
The request must be submitted by the deadline for payment of the first instalment of the enrolment fees for those enrolling in years after the first.
After carrying out the necessary assessments, the Educational Council will determine any new educational requirements for the completion of the degree.
3. Costs
With regard to the costs of enrolment fees, the surcharges provided for in Article 67 apply to those who are beyond the allotted time.
4. Opportunities to avoid the surcharge and get back "on track"
A. If you are enrolled in programmes under Ministerial Decree 270/04 and have not yet passed the deadline for obtaining your degree, you can apply to switch to part-time for the 2025-2026 academic year by following the deadlines and procedures specified in Article 30.
B. If you are enrolled in a programme under Ministerial Decree 509/99 and have not yet passed the deadline for obtaining your degree, you can request a change to the system under Ministerial Decree 270/04 in accordance with the procedures set out in Article 31. For programmes with a limited number of places, you can only change systems if you have acquired:
- at least 40 credits for enrolment in the second year of three-year degree programmes;
- at least 200 credits (180+20) for enrolment in the second year of master's degree programmes, subject to obtaining a three-year degree.
The transfer to programmes under Ministerial Decree 270/04 and the related recognition of credits is based on specific conversion tables prepared by the Faculties.
5. Late enrolment from other Italian universities
A. If you are enrolled beyond the allotted time in a course at another Italian university and have exceeded the limit set by your university of origin for obtaining your degree, you can request recognition of your previous educational history at Sapienza, after completing the procedures for admission to a programme under Ministerial Decree 270/04.
The recognition of previous exams is only possible if the teaching departments verify their compatibility with the new educational programme.
To request recognition of previous exams, you must submit an application for assessment of your previous educational history in the manner specified on the page https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758.
B. Recognition of the previous educational history requires the payment of a fixed fee of €2,255, to be paid together with the first instalment of the enrolment fees, the regional tax and the stamp duty, within the deadlines set for admission to the new Sapienza degree programme.
C. If you have a disability of 66% or above or hold a disability certificate pursuant to Article 3, paragraph 1, of Law No. 104 of 5 February 1992, you are required to pay:
- a fixed fee of €30 for each year between the date of application and the date on which you stopped making payments;
- stamp duty (€16).
The amounts will be generated by the Student Administration Office on Infostud.
