Giancarlo Siani and his legacy

On Friday, September 23, a ceremony was held to commemorate the journalist Giancarlo Siani, killed by the Camorra on September 23, 1985. Sapienza University, together with the Giancarlo Siani Foundation, commemorated the journalist's commitment - to the point of sacrificing his life - with articles and investigations denouncing the power of the Camorra in the 1980s when the phenomenon was being guiltily downplayed by many.
On Friday, September 23, a ceremony was held to commemorate the journalist Giancarlo Siani, who was killed 36 years ago by the Camorra, an Italian Mafia-type criminal organisation and criminal society originating in the region of Campania, on September 23 1985. The event took place at the stumbling stone dedicated to the journalist in the Main Campus.

The event, attended by many students, commemorated the journalist's civic engagement  - to the point of sacrificing his life - who had courageously exposed the power of the Camorra at a time, the 1980s when the phenomenon was culpably underestimated and downplayed by many. Giancarlo Siani, a reporter for Il Mattino, an Italian newspaper, was 26 years old when he was killed in Naples while parking his car in front of his house. In his articles and investigations, which were extremely risky for the Camorra bosses, he uncovered the links between organised crime, public procurement and politics in Campania, also in connection with the Sicilian mafia.
