Sapienza strengthens its fight against gender-based violence

Special meeting of the governing bodies on measures against all forms of violence and discrimination. Approval of Sapienza's civil action for the femicide of student Ilaria Sula

Sapienza's Academic Senate and Board of Governors, meeting jointly with the Interdepartmental Coordination Committee, took stock of the actions implemented by our University to prevent and combat all forms of violence, overcoming gender stereotypes and prejudices.

The day after the tragic death of Ilaria Sula, a Sapienza student and victim of femicide, Rector Antonella Polimeni convened a collegial meeting of the governing bodies to reiterate our university's commitment to the issue and to implement further measures to ensure that Sapienza is increasingly a place where all people who study and work are and feel safe and protected, including reporting any episodes of discrimination or violence.

At today's meeting, the governing bodies approved Sapienza's participation as a plaintiff in the Ilaria Sula femicide trial.

From the Centro antiviolenza to the Confidential Counsellor, from psychological counselling activities to alias careers and identities for transgender and non-binary students and staff, from training courses such as "la cassetta degli attrezzi contro la violenza di genere" (the toolbox against gender-based violence) to reporting bodies such as Students' ombudspersons, there are various figures and initiatives planned by Sapienza to encourage reporting and the application of specific measures.

Sapienza has included these policies in its Equality Plan, which contains 10 objectives and 22 strategic actions, the progress of which is constantly monitored. At the same time, Sapienza has proposed for approval its Equity Plan, which defines and further develops the ‘ecosystem’ on which it intends to base its equity policies, placing them in an intersectional perspective, capable of taking into account that the various forms of discrimination are mutually reinforcing. Both documents will also be available in English shortly.
