Irene Giardina of the Department of Physics has been selected for the "Max Delbruck Prize 2021" of the American Physical Society, an international award that rewards the best biophysics research. This is the first time that the Delbruck Prize has been awarded to an Italian scientist.

The prize was awarded "for the incisive combination of observation, analysis and theory in clarifying the fascinating statistical physics problems underlying the collective behaviour of natural systems, such as flocks of birds and swarms of insects".

The award, which has been bestowed together with Andrea Cavagna, research manager of the Institute for Complex Systems (ISC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Rome, will be consigned during the APS March Meeting in 2021.
