Sapienza leads Maps, a three-year, €10m project on sub-Saharan migration policy
Sapienza University of Rome will coordinate one of the most impressive international research projects on the complex panorama of migration in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the impact of the environmental, socio-economic and political crises affecting the region.
MAPS (Migration and Displacement Action Plan for Sub-Saharan Africa) is the name of the project that will be coordinated over the next three years by Cristina Giudici of the Department of Methods and Models for Economics, Territory and Finance (MEMOTEF) of Sapienza University, holder of the UNESCO Chair in Population, Migration and Development.
The research project, which aims to inform the response of local governments to the challenge of migration, is funded by the EuropeAid budget line with a total budget of €10 million, of which €8 million is from the European Commission.
The research will be carried out in 10 sub-Saharan African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa) through the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data related to migration, around four main thematic areas: population (People), environment (Planet), economic and social sustainability (Prosperity), human rights (Peace).
