Sapienza once again first in Italy for ARWU 2023

In the Academic Ranking of World Universities, published by the Shanghai Ranking agency, Sapienza is the only Italian university in the 101-150 bracket

Sapienza is once again first in Italy, and the only Italian university in the 101-150 bracket, according to the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released on August 15 by the independent organisation Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

"This result once again confirms Sapienza's prestige at the international level," says Rector Antonella Polimeni. "Even if North American and British universities top the ranking, thanks in part to the greater resources at their disposal, Sapienza, among the top 150 in the world, conveys excellence in all fields, combining an interdisciplinary training capacity with a quality of research and innovation that is unique in the world".

Arwu ranks the world's top 1,000 universities out of an estimated 2,500 worldwide. There are 6 ranking citeria: Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winning alumni and alumnae (10%) or researchers of each university (20%), the number of highly cited researchers according to Clarivate Analytics (20%), papers published in Nature and Science (20%), citations of techno-social publications (20%). These parameters are then correlated with academic staff, giving a further parameter of per capita productivity (10%). For the top 100 universities in the Shanghai ranking, the position and score are made explicit according to the parameters used. The others are ranked in groups of 50-100. Worldwide, Harvard University has been at the top of the ranking for 20 years, with Stanford University and MIT in second and third place respectively.

2023 has been a year of great success for Sapienza in terms of international rankings. The QS 2023 rankings by subject, published on March 22, 2023, once again placed Sapienza in 1st place worldwide in Classics & Ancient History, with two other Italian firsts in the subject areas "Arts & Humanities" and "Natural Sciences", ranked 41st and 44th worldwide, respectively. Sapienza is the only Italian university to boast first place at the international level.

The QS World University Rankings, published on June 27, 2023, also rewarded Sapienza, placing it 134th in the world, the best result ever achieved by our University in this ranking, which corresponds to 2nd place overall in Italy after the Politecnico di Milano (123rd). This puts Sapienza at the top of the generalist universities, followed by the University of Bologna in third place (154th).

Sapienza was also confirmed as Italy's number one in the Cwur (Center for World University Rankings) ranking released on 10 May 2023, ranking 116th globally.
