Sapienza: Tuition fee exemption for victims of gender-based violence and orphans of femicide

Sapienza is introducing the 'Libere di studiare' (Free to study) measure from the 2025/26 academic year. The new regulation will exempt victims of gender-based violence and orphans of femicide in full

The Board of Governors of Sapienza University of Rome today unanimously approved the introduction of a new measure granting total exemption from enrolment fees for all courses (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD and Advanced professional course) for victims of gender-based violence and orphans of femicide. Enrolment will require only the payment of a fixed fee of 30 euros, already applicable to other vulnerable categories. The measure will come into force from the current academic year 2025-2026.

To access this measure, eligible individuals must submit an application to their Student Affairs Office, attaching the certification issued by anti-violence centres recognised by the Regions or social services. The documentation will be evaluated by Sapienza's Confidential Counsellor, and the benefit is renewable for the entire duration of the degree programme plus one additional year.

The initiative is one of a number of measures that Sapienza has introduced in recent years to protect vulnerable people, ranging from the AntiViolence Centre, which was set up in collaboration with the Lazio Region and Lazio DiSCo, to the Gender Equality Plan. Other initiatives include the Code of Conduct against sexual harassment, the Regulations for alias careers for transgender students, the work of the Confidential Counsellor, and the activities of the Comitato Unico di Garanzia.

This new measure strengthens Sapienza's social commitment, drawing inspiration from the principles of the 'Reddito di Libertà' scheme to provide concrete support for the right to education and the path to personal and economic independence for those who have escaped violence.
