Sapienza, World Leader in Classical Studies

It has been published the international ranking QS for the year 2019: The University is once again world leader in classical studies and obtains the national record in 12 subjects. - Sapienza is the only Italian university that obtained an unconditional primacy- In the top 100 there are now 12 subjects.

Sapienza is once again world leader in classical studies according to the international ranking made by the Quacquarelli Symonds institution, that awarded the University with the first place in  “Classics & Ancient History”. Also this year Sapienza is the only Italian university that obtained an unconditional primacy in the Ranking by Subjects 2019, published on Feb. 27, 2019. 

Moreover, the University obtained an 11th place in te section Archeolgy, a 34th in Physics and a 43th in Library sciences.
Sapienza is in the international top 100 ranking for 21 disciplines, five more than the 16 obtained last year. To the 4 subjects in the top 50 world ranking are to be added other 17 subjects within the first 100 of the ranking, among which for the first time, Engineering – chemical, Geography, Medicine e Statistics & operational research.

The university obtained an excellence position also in Anatomy & physiology, Anthropology, Computer science & information system, Development studies, Engineering – civil & structural, Engineering – mechanical & aeronautical & manufacturing, Engineering electrical & electronic, History, Law, Mathematics, Modern languages, Pharmacy & pharmacology, Theology divinity & religious studies.

Always in an international perspective, Sapienza moves forward in 4 of the 5 macro areas in which the subjects are divided (Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences and medicines, Social Science & Management), ranking among the top 100 in the world in 3 of them, including the Natural Sciences macroarea which, with 57th place and 81.7 points, represents a sector of excellence of the University.

"We find ourselves competing with foreign universities that have much greater resources, from the American Harvard to the British Oxford and Cambridge, and we do our best to keep up the tradition of excellence in research and didactics - says the rector Eugenio Gaudio - the growth of Sapienza University is the result of common and shared efforts within the university, which bring prestige to the Italian university system on the international scene. An important result that shows an overall improvement, also confirmed by the growing number of students enrolled within the prescribed time and by the capacity to attract financing ".


The Rector continues: "The absolute primacy in classical studies is the recognition of the cultural centrality of the country: this heritage constitutes the founding base of our society and we have the duty to transmit it to our students, because it offers analysis tools and transversal skills, which can make the difference even in a job market where technology and technical-scientific skills evolve extremely quickly, becoming obsolete in a short time ".

The ranking data also highlight the excellent positioning of Sapienza at the national level: the University registers primates in 12 subjects and 1 macro-area and ranks second and third in further 16 other subjects.
