Valeteviatores, digitised Latin epigraphs become a historical video game
Under Call EACEA/28/2019 of the Creative Europe - Media programme (Bridging culture and audiovisual content through digital), the European Commission has co-founded, for a total of €311,108.07, the project Valete vos viatores: travelling through Latin inscriptions across the Roman Empire.
The project, which will take a year and a half from January 2021 to June 2022, is coordinated by the University of Navarra and aims to acquire 3D scans of a selection of Latin inscriptions preserved in various Roman cities, from Portugal to Rome, via France and Spain, to be incorporated into a video game (to be developed by a specialised company). The game's theme will be a journey from the borders to the centre of the Roman Empire, with a special focus on the epigraphic documentation, which was an important component of the ancient landscape, often not adequately valued.
The Department of Ancient World Studies of Sapienza University, directed by Giorgio Piras, participates in the initiative. It coordinates the Roman section of the project, which will concern some of the Latin inscriptions preserved in the National Roman Museum. Silvia Orlandi, who has already been in charge of the scientific coordination of the European project EAGLE (Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Inscriptions: www.eagle-network.eu), is responsible for the activity at Sapienza.
