Educational goals

PhD Programme in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology In a modern scenario of integrated scientific approach, the 4 curricula of the PhD program in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology allow the development of taxonomy and systematic projects, comparative anatomy and physiology, morphology and morphometry, human anthropology and paleontology, molecular genetics, evolutionary biology, biochemistry and physiology, applied biology, ecology, ethology, conservation biology and ecological modeling, ecosystem services, environmental and agri-food sustainability and in the field of medicines of natural origin. The research topics move within the common evolutionary frame of reference and are strongly interconnected, especially in the light of the complex system of structural and functional relationships between human beings, plants, animals, microorganisms and the abiotic environment. In this vision of synthesis, the teaching and research experiences that are proposed include international collaborations and a training course of high professional qualification, suitable for multiple work activities in the environmental, evolutionary and agri-food context. The PhD program aims to train highly qualified professionals capable to autonomously design and carry out basic and applied research in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology, also in view of the national and international guidelines and regulations. Antropology (Ref. prof. Giovanni Destro-Bisol) The focus of this curriculum is the natural history of the human species, as far it concerns our origin and biological evolution, in relation to the variability of the order of primates and the interaction with human cultures and with the environment in becoming. Animal Biology (Ref. prof. Luigi Maiorano) The curriculum develops themes concerning the main aspects of animal biology, relating to animal phylogeny, the theory and practice of biological systematics, micro- and macroevolution, descriptive aspects of the functional level and interpretative aspects in an adaptive key. Botany (Ref. prof. Maria Maddalena Altamura) The curriculum offers excellent training in various sectors of plant biology, developing research projects that range from biotechnological innovation to human health, plant pathology, biosystematics of current and fossil plants. Ecological Sciences (Ref. prof. Marcello Vitale) The curriculum offers a scientific qualification in environmental complexity, with particular regard to the analysis, monitoring, representation and simulation of the structural characteristics, mechanisms and processes that underpin the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
