Email FAQs
I am having problems using my mail client
As of March 14, 2025, you must use the OAuth authentication method to access third-party apps in order to provide greater security for your account.
What does this mean for you?
- You will no longer be able to use apps that require only a username and password to access your account.
- You will have to use apps that support OAuth, a more secure login method.
What do you need to do?
- Verify that the apps you use support OAuth.
- If not, you will need to update them or switch to compatible apps.
Why this change?
- OAuth offers greater protection against unauthorised access and credential theft.
- This update is necessary to maintain high security standards for your account.
For more information, see Google's official guides:

I would like to forward my uniroma1.it email to a different private email address
You can forward your email to other accounts you have access to. The Google Apps owner must do the procedure, and confirmation from the recipient is necessary. Settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP
I have forgotten my password, how do I get it back?
You can use the password recovery procedure found on "Reset your Password" page (in Italian)
Password recovery is automatic if the following security information is stored in your user profile:
- a private email address (used to receive the new password);
- the answer to the secret question (to be chosen from those suggested).
This information is recorded from the Google Apps User Profile login page.
If you have forgotten your password but have not registered your security information, you can follow the Delayed Password Recovery procedure. This involves sending an email to recuperopassword@uniroma1.it with the email address you want to unlock and a private email address where you will receive your password. A copy of your ID must be attached.
How can I set up my mobile phone?
Open your smartphone’s Gmail app, create a new account and type in your “uniroma.1” email address. From time to time, the system will send you to the university login page. No other settings are needed.
I have got a private Gmail address. Can I use both my accounts at the same time?
Yes, you can open several accounts at the same time using the same browser. Open your Google App, click on your account’s icon (top right) and click “add another account”. The system will ask you for information about your other account. You can repeat this procedure for different accounts.
When I type in my Username and Password, the system does not work
If you receive the following message “Login Failed: Invalid user” please check whether you typed in the right password. Please note: double-check single characters and uppercase and lowercase letters too. If you did not reply to the messages sent for the user census that takes place every three years, your account might have been suspended. Please click here to check
I have an institutional email as PhD student/Resident. How do I get access to my mail?
PhD students/residents have 2 different accounts: staff/personal (@uniroma1.it) and student (@studenti.uniroma1.it).
The two accounts are distinct in every respect: different usernames, different passwords, different mail access links and different password change and reset tools.
- The student mailbox is accessed from https://mail.google.com/a/studenti.uniroma1.it with Infostud credentials. The login does not go through the University's SSO and has nothing to do with IDM. The continued activity of this box is linked to student status. Credential management goes through InfoStud (changes take up to 2 hours to propagate).
- The institutional mailbox, as an ‘employee’, is accessed through IDM with Sapienza credentials from https://mail.google.com/a/uniroma1.it. For password changes and resets please refer to this page (in Italian)
You cannot open https://mail.google.com/a/uniroma1.it and then attempt to log in as a student (you will not be recognised by Google). Nor can you open https://mail.google.com/a/studenti.uniroma1.it and attempt to log in with Sapienza credentials; the login will fail. Much less can you use your Infostud password for the @uniroma1.it user and vice versa.
Finally, since IDM is an SSO system, i.e. Single Sign On, if you have logged in as a student (e.g. to elearning) you MUST log out in order to access @uniroma1.it mail or use a different browser or an incognito window.
Is there a limit to the number of messages I can send from my institutional account?
Yes, Google limits the amount of Gmail messages users can send each day and the number of recipients that can be added to each message:
The phishing messages have disappeared from my email. Could this be because I clicked on the link?
Once an e-mail message is identified as malicious or SPAM, it may be moved to the Trash, Spam or automatically removed.
These are procedures to ensure the security of users.
How do I create e-mail filtering rules?
On your computer, you can manage your incoming mail using Gmail filters to label, archive, delete, add to Specials or automatically forward mail.
