Answers to frequently asked questions about setting up a Sapienza University Start-Up

How is the proposal approval process organised?

It is organised into three stages:

  • a first preliminary stage, during which the Office in charge will meet with the proposers to define the project and assist in the preparation of the documentation to be submitted to the Spin-off and Start-Up Commission;
  • a second stage of proposal evaluation by the Spin-off and Start-Up Commission;
  • a third and final stage of approval by the Governing Bodies, the Academic Senate and the Board of Governors.

Regarding the first stage what are the steps and documents to be submitted to the Office?

The following steps must be taken:

  • prepare the business plan;
  • obtain a favourable opinion from the Department Board of professors belonging to Sapienza who are members of the start-up;
  • send the documentation (proposal form, business plan, Department Board resolution, proposers’ CV) to spinoff@uniroma1.it.

Do I have to belong to Sapienza staff to propose a start-up?

No. Members not belonging to Sapienza staff (students, PhD students, research fellows, etc.) may also apply, provided that they present a supporting statement from a Sapienza faculty member, pursuant to art. 3 of the Sapienza spin-off and start-up regulations.

I am a Sapienza researcher/faculty member, do I need Sapienza’s authorisation to start a start-up?

Yes. Please read the Italian version of this section for more information.

Authorisation is granted by the Board of Governors, upon completion of the proposal approval process.

I am a Sapienza researcher/professor, how much can I commit to the start-up?

The commitment in the start-up must be compatible with the institutional research and teaching duties of the researcher/professor status.

Can the start-up use Sapienza's spaces?

Yes, the start-up can use Sapienza's spaces (room or laboratory) with the stipulation of a space-use agreement between the start-up and Sapienza. There is an annual fee: 154 euro *sqm. Use can be exclusive or mixed. In the case of mixed use, the total cost is halved.

What is the procedure for requesting Sapienza's spaces?

The Department Board must resolve favourably on the use and the resolution must be sent to spinoff@uniroma1.it. Subsequently, the agreement will be submitted to the Board of Governors for approval.

Can the start-up use the Sapienza trademark?

Yes, the start-up can use the Sapienza trademark, a licence to use the trademark is granted free of charge for the first three years.
