Art. 21 - EXAMINATIONS, QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS, INTERNSHIPS, OTHER EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

1. Requirements and terms

A.  To take the examinations specified in your degree programme and have them recorded, you can book the exam session only at the end of the classes scheduled for each year of enrolment.

B.  To book exams, you must be up to date with your enrolment fee payments. Otherwise, the exam will only be recorded after the payments have been settled, which must take place within 10 calendar days of the date of recording of the first exam taken without payment. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of all exams taken after the deadline for payment of fees.

Exams taken under the flat-rate system will be automatically cancelled.

C. The following are not considered exams: all so-called “ongoing assessments”, “exemptions” and “ qualifying examinations” for which no record is made in the information system. Ongoing assessments for multi-semester courses, although not exams, are subject to the provisions specified in this article.

D. You may take each examination:

- in all the examination sessions scheduled for the session, regardless of any previous results;

- in another group, in the case of groupings, if you have the authorisation of the President of your degree programme and there are valid reasons for doing so. Information on the possibility of changing the course grouping in order to attend courses and take examinations is available in the Attendance section of the Course Catalogue, by searching for your degree programme. If there are no specific instructions, you can contact your academic office;

- on the programme of the course provided in the year of the programme corresponding to your educational programme, only if you take the exam within two academic years following the one in which the course was held.

E. Under no circumstances may you retake an examination or other form of assessment that you have already taken and passed in the same degree programme, even if there has been a change in the programme, not even as an “examination of the student's choice”.

F. If you are enrolled in a three-year degree programme, you cannot take courses listed in the second level degree programme Manifestos as “elective exams”, with the exception of courses listed in the first three years of single-cycle second level degree programmes (Ministerial Decree 270/04). The administrative offices will cancel any exams taken in violation of this provision.

G. You must comply with attendance requirements and any preliminary requirements if specified in the teaching regulations of your degree programme, otherwise the exams taken in breach of these requirements will be cancelled.

H. If you are enrolled in a degree programme that does not require compulsory attendance, or if you have difficulty attending for work or personal reasons, you may request specific teaching resources from the lecturer in charge of the course.

2. Publication of the calendar and procedures for taking the examination

A. The teaching departments publish on their institutional websites, before the start of teaching activities, the annual calendar of examination sessions and exam dates and a comprehensive description of the procedures for taking the examinations, which cannot be changed during the academic year except in exceptional cases or cases of force majeure.

B. The examination covers the course syllabus. The content, procedures and number of exemption tests, ongoing assessments and qualifying examinations that do not require recording on the information system shall be communicated at the beginning of the lessons.

C.  Based on bookings or other methods of estimating the number of participants in each session in advance, teachers shall schedule the tests and give adequate notice to the students concerned.

3. Procedures

A.  Examination sessions are booked on the Infostud system.

B. You can print your exam booking receipt on Infostud until the closing date for booking the session. After that date, you can only print it from your institutional email address.

C. When booking the examination, you must complete the Opis questionnaire on the assessment of the teaching activity carried out.

D. On the day of the examination, you must present a valid identity document or your student card and the examination booking receipt, which will be signed by the lecturer at the time of recording the results. If you do not have your booking receipt with you, the lecturer may still record your exam without issuing any document.

E. After the exam, you can check Infostud to see if your results have been entered. Exam results are entered on Infostud within a maximum of 5 days from the end of the exam session.

F. To book examinations that are not listed on Infostud, for example those relating to programmes under the old system (prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99), you must contact the academic office of your degree programme.

4. Types of assessment

A. The number and type of assessments that determine the acquisition of credits are set out in the teaching regulations for each degree programme, within the maximum limits set by the ministerial decrees for the degree classes.

B. The tests may be oral, written or practical, or a combination of these, according to the procedures defined by the teaching departments.

C. The oral test is public. For other types of assessment, the teaching departments shall ensure adequate publicity.

5. Academic calendar and examination periods

A. The academic calendar must provide for separate and non-overlapping periods dedicated to teaching and to ordinary assessments of achievement (examinations, qualifying examinations).

B. Examination sessions must be scheduled by the Faculty Board, with the mandatory opinion of the student representatives on the board.

C. The academic calendar must include at least five regular examination sessions for each academic year plus two special sessions (see paragraph 6 of this article). Additional regular or special sessions may be scheduled for courses that show critical issues, as determined by the Faculty Board.

D. There shall be three ordinary examination periods, structured as follows:

D1. for courses taught in the first semester:

- the first ordinary examination period shall take place in January/February and may begin at the end of the teaching period; it includes at least two examination sessions;

- the third ordinary examination period takes place in September/October and ends before the start of teaching activities; it includes at least one examination session.

D2. For courses taught in the second semester:

- The first regular examination period takes place in June/July and may begin at the end of teaching activities; it includes at least two examination sessions.

- The second regular examination period takes place in September/October; it includes at least one examination session and ends before the start of teaching activities.

- the third regular examination period takes place in January of the following calendar year; it includes at least one examination session;

- the fifth regular examination session may be held at any time during the academic break, at the discretion of the Faculties.

D3. For any annual courses, the examination schedule for second semester courses applies.

6. Examination dates

Examination dates are published in the Course Catalogue, on the pages for each degree programme, under Attendance > Courses.

Go to the Catalogue

Within the periods referred to in point 5 above, the degree programmes set the examination dates on the basis of the following criteria:

- each exam session is set after a minimum of 14 consecutive calendar days from the previous exam session for the same course;

- the dates of ordinary exam sessions must not, as a rule, coincide with lecture periods; special exam sessions may, in exceptional cases, overlap;

- it is not permitted to set exam sessions for courses in the same year of the same degree programme on the same day;

- exam dates are distributed as evenly as possible for courses in the same year of the same degree programme;

- exams may not be brought forward from the published calendar under any circumstances;

- exams may be postponed from the published calendar in exceptional circumstances if authorised by the Head of the Degree Programme and are publicised and communicated in a timely manner;

- The lecturer is obliged to sign and “close” all open examination reports, even in the absence of persons registered for the examination, within five (5) days of the date of conclusion of the examination session and, in the case of summer sessions, no later than 10 August of each year.

For any additional information on examination sessions, please contact the academic office of your degree programme.

7. Special examination sessions

You may take special examination sessions if you meet one of the following conditions:

- you are enrolled outside the standard duration of your degree programme;

- you have opted for part-time study (Art. 30);

- you have a recognised disability/invalidity (Art. 56);

- you have been diagnosed with specific learning disorders (Art. 57), (Academic Senate Resolution of 12 June 2018);

- you have a child under the age of three (Academic Senate Resolution of 9 July 2019);

- you have completed all the years of attendance required for your programme year (Academic Senate Resolution of 13 October 2020);

- you have athlete status, as defined in Article 52 (Academic Senate Resolution of 14 September 2021);

- you are enrolled in two degree programmes concurrently (Article 4) (Academic Senate Resolution of 17 January 2023);

- you have the status of caregiver or young caregiver in accordance with current regulations (Academic Senate Resolution of 11 March 2025). In this case, in order to take advantage of the special exam sessions, you must send the relevant documentation from your institutional email account to the Student Administration Office of your degree programme at least 20 days before the start of the special exam session;

- you have carried out, for at least 60 days, even if not continuously, in the six months prior to the start date of the special exam session (Academic Senate Resolution of 2 March 2021):

- paid and contracted work on behalf of private individuals, including cooperatives, or public bodies;

- self-employed work with or without a VAT number;

- universal civil voluntary work for a public or private body;

- commercial, craft or agricultural business activities.

In these cases, in order to take advantage of the special exam sessions, you must send a self-certification from your institutional email account to the course lecturer and a copy to the Student Administration Office of your degree programme at least 20 days before the start of the special exam session. The form to be completed is available on the university website at https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758 .

8. Assessment and entry of results

A. Individual performance in exams is assessed on a scale of 1 to 30. The test is passed with a grade of at least 18/30.

In the case of a maximum grade (30/30), honours may be awarded. The grade is recorded in a specific report. The credits associated with the course are acquired in any case upon passing the examination.

B. In some cases, as provided for in the teaching regulations of the degree programmes, the assessment is expressed as “pass/fail”. The test is passed with a “pass” assessment, which is recorded in a dedicated report.

C. At the end of the examination, you have the right to ask and be informed of the criteria used to determine the grade and to view your test, if it is written.

D. A negative assessment does not result in a grade being awarded, so it does not affect the final average grade.

It is noted on the report with the word ‘“refusal”. If you wish, you can request that the negative assessment be recorded with the word ‘“failed”.

E. The lecturer must also log on Infostud any refusal of a grade equal to or higher than 18, noting it on the report with the word ‘“refusal” together with the refused grade.

The grade recorded in this way remains, in every case, unrelated to the student's academic career, is not included in any way in the curriculum and does not affect the final grade average (Academic Senate Resolution of 28 March 2017). In the case of written examinations, the teaching facilities shall establish specific procedures for obtaining acceptance or refusal of the grade.

9. Early examinations

You may request two early examinations per year if:

- you have already taken all the examinations required for your programme year and for previous years;

- you have the authorisation of the relevant teaching departments (Area Council, degree programme Council or Faculty Council), which must issue a specific document and notify the Administrative Secretariat, which will then enable you to book the examinations on Infostud. Authorisation can only be granted if the exams you are requesting to take early are part of the same programme as your course. If the programme is different, authorisation can only be granted on condition that the Infostud code for the exams you are requesting to take early in the new programme is the same as the code for the same exams in the immediately preceding programme, in the academic year in which the request is submitted.

10. Request for exam programmes for previous years

To request course programmes from previous years that are not available in the catalogue, please contact the academic office of your degree programme.

11. Internships and other educational activities

The teaching regulations for each degree programme establish the requirements and terms for internships, which may be curricular, non-curricular, postgraduate, etc.

The teaching regulations are available in the course catalogue, in the “Organisation and contacts” section of each degree programme. Further information and operating procedures are also specified in the course catalogue, in the Attendance>Internships section of each degree programme, and on the Faculty/Department websites.

Go to the Catalogue

For the recognition of curricular internships and other educational activities, you must submit the necessary documentation to the teaching department to which your degree programme belongs.
