1. Self-certification
You can self-certify both your university degree and the exams you have taken, except in cases where an official certificate is expressly required, as is usually the case for educational activities carried out abroad. (Regulatory reference: Presidential Decree 445/2000 and subsequent amendments).
2. Auditing of self-certifications
When you submit a self-certification, the procedures remain suspended until the body that holds the data (e.g. National Social Security Institute (INPS), local authorities (Comuni), other universities) confirms that the information is correct.
3. Certificates downloadable from Infostud
From the Infostud system, you can download and print (also in English) certificates stating your enrolment, exams passed, the degree awarded and the legal duration of the programme, for example for the redemption of years for pension purposes. If you cannot find the certificate you need, please contact the administrative office of your degree programme.
4. Digital stamp
Certificates downloaded from Infostud have a digital stamp that guarantees the same legal value as certificates issued at the counter. This also allows the institutions that receive them to verify their authenticity at any time.
Please note that a revenue stamp must be affixed to use the printed certificate.
5. Blocking of certificates
You can obtain certificates stating your university career if you are up to date with the payment of fees, late payment fines and the regional tax for the right to study. If you do not pay your fees by the deadlines, you cannot request certificates until you have paid what you owe, nor can you issue the relevant self-certifications to third parties.
6. Certificates to be requested from the administrative office
Certificates not available on Infostud can be requested directly from the administrative office by showing a valid ID and paying a stamp duty of €16.
Certificates issued at the counter can only be given to you or to another person with your authorisation and a copy of your ID.
The person you authorise must also show their identity document.
The authorisation form must be submitted in original and is available at
https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758
7. Certificates valid abroad
If you need a certificate that is valid abroad, you must:
- request a stamped certificate signed by an authorised Sapienza official (with signature registered with the Prefecture) from the administrative office;
- submit the request for legalisation to the Prefecture autonomously;
- have the document translated by a sworn translator registered with the Italian Courts or with the Consulates/Embassies of the country of destination.
In some cases, you may also be required to provide a Diploma Supplement (see next point).
8. Diploma Supplement
Sapienza issues, as a supplement to each degree certificate, a document that provides, in accordance with the models adopted by European countries, additional information on the educational programme followed.
You can request the Diploma Supplement (in Italian and English) free of charge from the Student Administration Office. It is only issued for bachelor's and master's degree programmes. The Diploma Supplement can only be issued to those who have been awarded the degree. If requested for use abroad, the Student Administration Office will affix the University stamp and the signature of the relevant official.
9. Costs
If you have interrupted your educational relationship with Sapienza due to interruption, withdrawal, exceeding the deadline for obtaining your degree or transfer to another university, when you request a stamped certificate of studies from the Student Administration Office, you will have to pay €5.16 in administrative fees for each certificate requested. The administrative fees must be paid through PagoPa.
10. Assessment of qualifications and career by third parties
If you appoint third parties (foreign universities, agencies for the recognition of qualifications abroad, etc.) to acquire data on your academic career and/or the attainment of qualifications at this University, you must sign a proxy form, attaching a copy of a valid identity document, and sign a declaration of exemption from liability in favour of this University.
The procedure is available at https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758
