Sapienza for “M’illumino di meno” campaign
Sapienza University renews its support for “M’illumino di meno”, the energy-saving and sustainable lifestyle campaign launched by Carterpillar and Radio2. On Friday, March 6, 2020, at the Botanical Garden of Rome, Sapienza will organise a theoretical-practical seminar entitled “Energy, Climate Change and Forest Vegetation”. The event has been postponed to a future date due to precautionary measures for coronavirus. The intention, at the event, was to bed out 30 Mediterranean evergreen shrubs and arboreal plants to show how forest vegetation develop. This year's edition of "M'illumino di meno" wishes to plant new trees as a contribution to all the participants.
Rector Eugenio Gaudio, the Director of the Department of Environmental Biology Maria Maddalena Altamura, the Director of the Botanical Garden Museum Fabio Attorre, the Deputy Rector for Energy Policies Livio de Santoli and the Professor of Ecology, Fausto Manes, will be attending the event.
The “M’illumino di meno” campaign aims to highlight the importance of renewable energy. Sunlight, for instance, reaches our planet daily and provides the energy needed for photosynthesis, the “life machine”, to take place. Flora living on earth, sea and inland waters produce the organic matter through photosynthesis. In the same way, natural ecosystems constantly provide necessities and services for human well-being and better environmental quality. Urban and peri-urban forestry, for instance, absorb CO2, improve air quality by removing air pollutants and mitigate the temperature of the surrounding areas. This is why promoting green infrastructure in urban and peri-urban areas is so important.
