Sapienza mourns the passing of Corrado Fanelli

Rector Antonella Polimeni, on her own behalf and on behalf of the entire University community, extends her deepest condolences on the death of Corrado Fanelli, former director of the Department of Environmental Biology and Sapienza's Botanical Garden.

Graduated in Biological Sciences in 1969 and specialised in Microbiology, he joined Sapienza University in 1980, obtaining the chair of Plant Pathology and subsequently also holding the position of Coordinator of the Bachelor's degree programme in Agro-Industrial Biotechnology, before becoming Department Director from 2013 to 2016.
Fanelli conducted research on different aspects of fungal metabolism, in particular on factors involved with the production and control of aflatoxin synthesis in food and feed. He was scientific coordinator and partner in national and international projects on the control of aflatoxin production in foodstuffs and the application of integrated pest management against fungi responsible for post-harvest infections.

Author of more than 130 publications and invited speaker at more than 60 international congresses, Fanelli was also in charge of research units of Sapienza, Faculty, Ministry of Universities and Research and CNR projects.

The lay farewell ceremony for Professor Fanelli will take place on Tuesday, October 15, at 9 AM in the Egyptian Temple of the Verano Cemetery.
