SapienzaSport swimmers challenge the Strait of Messina

On Wednesday, September 15, a group of SapienzaSport swimmers, comprising engineering and medical students together with lecturers and staff from the Infosapienza Centre, swam the 3.5 km distance across the Strait of Messina. One swimmer performed the arduous feat of the double crossing

On September 15, 2021, the SapienzaSport swimmers embarked on an exciting adventure across the Strait of Messina, a narrow strait between Sicily's eastern tip and Calabria's western tip in southern Italy.

The group, made up of engineering and medical students, all excellent athletes, together with lecturers and staff from the Infosapienza Centre, wanted to challenge the strong currents in the stretch between Scilla and Cariddi. They set off from the Torre Faro pier (Messina, Sicily) to reach the Calabrian beach of Cannitello (Reggio Calabria) over a distance of about 3.5 km.

Giuseppe Arrabito, from the Infosapienza Centre, was the only one of the group to make the arduous feat of the double crossing, the round trip swimming across the Strait.

The team, led by coach Alessandro Scotto di Palumbo, SapienzaSport sports manager, and coach Fabio Graziani, pool manager, achieved their goal with excellent chronometric performance, thanks also to the good weather and sea conditions.

A daring group that, with commitment, determination and motivation, managed to meet and overcome the titanic challenge.
