Educational goals

The Associated Doctorate in Artificial Intelligence at Sapienza represents the continuation of the experience established by the federation of the five National Doctorates in Artificial Intelligence (AI) launched in November 2021 and described on the PhD-AI.it website. Each of these focuses on a central theme for the digital transformation of society—the discipline of Artificial Intelligence itself. Each program is led by a lead university, brings together a broad consortium of universities and research institutions, and collaborates with others at various levels, forming a true doctoral network with a shared foundation focused on the foundational aspects of AI.
Generally speaking, the doctorate was established to mobilize the Italian scientific community to create a federation of AI doctoral courses at the highest scientific level, aimed at boosting research and industrial and social innovation within the country. Both in terms of AI foundations and its transformative effects, the themes of the Doctorate in Artificial Intelligence are characterized by a strong multidisciplinary nature. This promotes the integration of principles, methodologies, and technologies from various fields, including computer science, mathematics, physics, robotics, biology, and cognitive sciences.
Currently, the faculty board of the associated doctorate is composed of professors from the following universities and institutions:

Politecnico di Bari
Free University of Bozen-Bolzano
University of Brescia
University of Cagliari
University of Calabria
University of Genoa
Roma Tre University
University of Verona
University of Udine
Fondazione Bruno Kessler
Unitelma Sapienza
CNR (National Research Council)

The specific objectives of the PhD-AI are:

To build a community of young researchers in training and AI researchers distributed across different regions and disciplines;
To foster the exchange of multidisciplinary expertise between network nodes through teaching and research mobility periods for doctoral students;
To integrate and strengthen the Italian network of AI research centers, also in relation to the European ICT-48-H2020 program “Towards a vibrant European network of AI excellence centres” and the European strategy for developing trustworthy, human-centric AI.
