Educational goals

The PhD program in “School of Statistical Sciences” prepares and initiates students into quantitative research within the field of Statistics. It trains high-level professionals for roles requiring expertise in “information management” in its broadest sense, across all stages (production and analysis), for placement within universities, research institutions, and public or private research departments, both in Italy and abroad. It is structured into three curricula as follows.
DEMOGRAPHY
It aims to train researchers and highly professional figures with specific skills in the study of the population processes in Italy and abroad.
The training activity promotes a multidisciplinary vision with a solid methodological base, shared within the European Doctoral School of Demography. It provides the conceptual and methodological tools necessary to study populations, their dynamics, and the relationship between demographic and economic/social behavior.
ACTUARIAL SCIENCES
Curriculum in A.S. trains researchers with high scientific qualifications in the Actuarial Sciences and it is the only one in the current national offering of PhD programs dedicated to advanced research in Actuarial Sciences.
Study and research activities are strongly focused on quantitative methods for measuring and managing the risks typical of insurance companies and for controlling the company's solvency with advanced institutional courses related to private insurance and social security.
Students are encouraged to spend periods of study and research abroad, such as ETH Zurich, University of Copenhagen, Cass Business School in London, University of Lausanne.
METHODOLOGICAL STATISTICS
The program aims to train professional figures with highly specialized skills in the management of “statistical information” in its various stages of production: design and execution of observational surveys and experiments, development of methodologies, and data analysis.
Institutional training is provided by advanced institutional and monographic courses in a variety of subject areas, including Real Analysis, Optimization, Probability, Stochastic Processes, Advanced Inference and Multivariate Statistics.
PhD students are encouraged to spend periods of study abroad in internationally recognized universities and research centers such as the University of California, the University of Glasgow, Harvard University, Novartis (Switzerland), the Bielefeld University, Imperial College London.
The program's primary objective is to introduce students to research. This is achieved by identifying a specific, relevant problem under the supervision of faculty members. Over the course of three years, students conduct original research for their doctoral theses.
During the program, all PhD students are encouraged to actively participate in all Department activities and research initiatives, and are involved in various funded research programs at national and international level.
