Project Abstract:
Single photon sources based on two-dimensional materials will be realised. The sources, integrated on photonic cavities with piezoelectric supports, will be used to make an integrated device for quantum applications. The project's ultimate goal is the realisation of a chip containing efficient sources of single photons.
The sources are based on the use of mechanical deformation in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Flakes of 2D material containing many monolayers will be deposited on the cavity and then subjected to irradiation with hydrogen ions, resulting in the formation of bubbles as thick as a single monolayer and thus able to emit light in predefined spatial regions. Sapienza will characterise the sources optically to establish their purity from the point of view of their use for quantum technologies. The sources will be deposited on a cavity, which in turn will be placed on a piezoelectric crystal that will act as a strain generator in a controlled manner so as to modify both the energy of the source and the resonance of the circular Bragg cavity on which coupling with the electromagnetic field modes in the cavity is desired.
