Ancient Jericho added to Unesco World Heritage list
Tell es-Sultan, or ancient Jericho, where Sapienza has been excavating since 1997, has been added to the list of World Heritage Sites by the Unesco committee
On September 17, 2023, the UNESCO Committee inscribed Tell es-Sultan, ancient Jericho, Palestine, on the World Heritage List. This recognition comes after twenty-six years (1997-2023) of commitment by the Italo-Palestinian Archaeological Mission to Jericho, led by the Palestinian Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism in collaboration with Sapienza, directed by Prof. Lorenzo Nigro and supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
