General information on PhDs

Description

The research doctorate is the highest level of university education and can be accessed after a Master's degree programme. It usually lasts three years, and candidates are selected through qualifications and exams. It is reserved for a limited number of participants. It is awarded the title of PhD.

The programme

To be admitted to a PhD programme, students must hold a Master's degree programme or a recognised foreign qualification. The PhD degree is awarded after a three-year study and research programme aimed at training, research and in-depth study of research methods in a specific field; a final doctoral dissertation is required. Each university regulates programmes, procedures for accessing and obtaining the qualification, educational objectives, duration, attendance. Doctoral programmes may be run in collaboration with other universities. Agreements may also be entered into with public and/or private bodies to fund additional doctoral scholarships.

Future opportunities

The PhD programme aims to prepare students for scientific research and provide them with the scientific knowledge and skills required in a university career or advanced public or private research centres.
