Sexually transmitted infections
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), formerly known as 'venereal diseases', are a large group of infectious diseases worldwide that can cause acute symptoms, chronic infections and serious long-term complications for millions of people each year. Hepatitis, HIV-AIDS, genital herpes, syphilis, gonorrhoea, condyloma acuminata and other HPV infections, molluscum contagiosum or vaginal trichomoniasis are only some of the best known examples of diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi or parasites.
These infections are transmitted through any type of sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, oral) by contact with infected body fluids (semen, vaginal secretions, blood, saliva), through blood (e.g. transfusions, contact with wounds, exchange of syringes, tattoos, piercings) or through other less common ways. To avoid them, it is very important to know both the risk factors and the correct behaviour to adopt during sexual intercourse. Timely treatment is also crucial.
