The Sapienza for Prisons project
Sapienza per il carcere is a network of initiatives that aims to promote the well-being of incarcerated persons and prison staff, facilitate the reintegration of former prisoners and break down prejudices within civil society, starting with the Sapienza community. The initiative began with the establishment of Sapienza&Carcere, an interdisciplinary group founded in 2021 with the aim of fostering constructive social relationships between the university, prisons, and civil society.
Sapienza's work is distinguished by its consideration of the various segments of the Italian prison system, including male, female and juvenile prisoners; offenders in pre-trial detention; ex-prisoners and/or probationers; prison officers; and theatre professionals working in prisons. Areas of intervention include architectural refurbishment of prison spaces, integrated workshops for ex-prisoners and students, artistic and performance productions arising from experiences within prison settings, training activities for staff (including prison officers, directors, and theatre professionals), education within prison settings, and the promotion of the right to health, physical well-being, and mental health.
