1. Requirements and terms
A. Part-time study offers you the opportunity to extend the expected duration of your degree programme by agreeing with the teaching institution on an educational programme with between 18 and 45 credits per year (including credits for the final exam) rather than the standard 60 credits per year.
This option allows you to avoid “out-of-term (fuori corso)” enrolment and the resulting increases in enrolment fees (see Art. 67).
B. All bachelor's, single-cycle master's and two-year master's degree programmes offer the part-time option.
C. You may choose to switch to part-time study at any time during your educational programme, provided you meet the deadlines set out in point 3.
D. You may only apply to switch to part-time study once per cycle of study.
E. Once approved, the request for part-time status is irrevocable and there is no possibility of returning to full-time status.
F. The part-time study regime does not apply:
- to those enrolled in degree programmes established prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99;
- those enrolled in distance learning degree programmes in agreement with the “Consorzio Nettuno” and the University of Rome Unitelma Sapienza (Art. 38);
- those who have completed the time required to obtain their degree (Art. 24), even if they have only not taken the final exam.
Any applications submitted in cases of exclusion will be automatically revoked.
G. If you opt for part-time study, you will not be eligible for:
- career interruptions for health reasons, pregnancy, first year of parenthood, sporting commitments (Art. 28);
- career interruptions for enrolment in another degree programme (Art. 29);
- family bonus (Art. 59)
- shortening of the course (Art. 22) in the year of transition to part-time.
H. The part-time regime is interrupted if:
- you transfer to another Sapienza degree programme (Arts. 5 and 6);
- you change your programme order (Art. 31).
You may reapply for part-time status starting in November of the year following the year in which you transferred to another programme or changed your programme order, and within the deadline set out in point 3.
With regard to the financial implications, the year in which you apply to switch to part-time study will be considered your first year of part-time study (see point 5 below), while the year of programme and degree programme will be determined by the teaching department on the basis of your academic record.
2. Deadlines
A. If you are already enrolled in a degree programme, in a year following the first, you must submit your application for part-time transfer by 15 December of each year.
B. If you are enrolling or registering for the first year, you must submit your application within 15 calendar days of paying the first instalment of your enrolment fees.
The teaching department normally approves applications by 31 January of each year.
3. Procedure
The application must be submitted on Infostud, following the procedures specified on the university website on the dedicated page.
The application is automatically sent to your teaching department.
The receipt of submission will be sent to your institutional email address.
The outcome of the assessment will be automatically sent to your institutional email address.
4. Reformulation of enrolment fees
A. The part-time regime provides for a reduction in enrolment fees, to the extent specified in points E., F., G., H.
B. The reduction in enrolment fees applies from the year of enrolment in part-time study and is not retroactive under any circumstances.
C. The reduction is applied to instalments after the first.
D. The amounts specified in the table in Article 44 of these Regulations are not valid for those who opt for part-time study.
E. If you are enrolled in a three-year degree programme, in addition to the regional tax and stamp duty, if you opt for part-time study, you will pay the following enrolment fees:
- first and second year of part-time study: 90% of the enrolment fees due;
- third year of part-time study: 80% of the enrolment fees due;
- subsequent years of part-time study: 60% of the enrolment fees due.
F. If you are enrolled in a second level two-year degree programme, in addition to the regional tax and stamp duty, if you opt for part-time study, you will pay the following enrolment fees:
- first year of part-time study: 90% of the enrolment fees due;
- second year of part-time study: 80% of the enrolment fees due;
- subsequent years of part-time study: 60% of the enrolment fees due.
G. If you are enrolled in a second level degree programme, in addition to the regional tax and stamp duty, if you opt for part-time study, you will be required to pay the following enrolment fees:
- first, second and third years of part-time study: 90% of the enrolment fees due;
- fourth, fifth and sixth years of part-time study: 80% of the enrolment fees due;
- subsequent years of part-time study: 60% of the enrolment fees due.
H. If you are enrolled in your second year beyond the allotted time of any degree programme, if you opt for part-time study, you will not incur the increase in enrolment fees specified in Article 68 (Board of Directors' resolution of 19 April 2011). After paying the first increased instalment, after switching to part-time study, you will receive an adjustment on the third instalment.
I. The reductions specified above are valid until the end of the part-time period.
If you enrol beyond the allotted time of the agreed programme duration, you must pay the ordinary fees due on the basis of the ISEE amount for the right to university education valid for the academic year in question, increased by 50%, starting from the first year beyond the allotted time (Board of Directors' resolution of 14 June 2011).
5. Deadline for obtaining the qualification
If you enrol part-time, you may take up to twice the agreed duration of the educational programme to obtain your qualification (e.g. if the agreed duration is 4 years, you must pass your exams within a total of 8 years), without prejudice to the financial terms specified in point 4(I) above.
After this period, the credits acquired may no longer be considered adequate for the required qualification and the Educational Council will, after appropriate assessments, determine any new educational requirements for obtaining the qualification.
6. Graduating earlier than the agreed time
If you obtain your degree before the end of the agreed period, in order to take the final exam early, you will have to pay the enrolment fees due for the entire agreed period.
In this case, in order to determine the amount (necessarily a lump sum) of the fees, the following will be taken into account:
- the latest ISEE declaration for the right to university education;
- the amount of enrolment fees for the academic year in which you graduate;
- the reduction for the missing period.
7. Duration of the programme for the redemption of years of study for pension purposes
The part-time option cannot change the normal duration of the programme for the redemption of years of study for pension purposes. Certificates will therefore specify the “normal duration of the programme”, which is valid for legal purposes, and the “agreed duration of the programme”, which concerns the teaching organisation of the programme itself.
