Italian Language Test for International Students

Italian language test for the A.Y. 2026-2027

For the A.Y. 2026-2027, the Italian language test ITA L2 certifying B2 proficiency will be organized by CISIA and held online in the @CASA format.

 

Who must take the test?

The test is mandatory and strictly reserved for all non-EU citizens residing abroad who require a study visa to attend a degree course taught in Italian.

Who is exempted?

  • EU citizens, non-EU citizens legally residing in Italy, and dual citizens (where one is an EU citizenship).
  • Students enrolling in degree programmes entirely taught in English.
  • Students holding a CLIQ proficiency certificate (B2 level or higher).
    • Note: For A.Y. 2026/2027, Sapienza accepts CLIQ certificates issued after January 1st, 2022. The certificate must be obtained before the Universitaly pre-enrolment and no later than June 30th, 2026.
  • Further exemptions can be found in Point 6 ("Linguistic knowledge") of the Ministerial Regulations.

The ITA L2 Test Structure

The ITA L2 test lasts 120 minutes and consists of 3 sections of increasing difficulty. Each section includes:

  • Listening (1 track)
  • Reading (1 text)
  • Language Structure (2 short texts)

Key Features:

  • Format: Multiple-choice questions with only one correct answer.
  • Timing: Each section has a specific time limit. Once time expires, you must proceed to the next section.
  • Navigation: If you finish a section early, you may move forward, but you cannot use the remaining time for other sections or return to a previous one.
  • Passing Score: Sapienza requires an overall minimum score of 55 points.

⚠️ Mandatory Technical Requirements: candidates must use a laptop and wired headphones/earphones for the listening sections. Wireless devices (Bluetooth) are strictly prohibited. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in exclusion from the test without a refund.

Registration to the test and fees

Test sessions will begin in March 2026. Seats are limited (100 per session) and fill up very quickly; we recommend booking as early as possible.

How to Register:

  1. Log in to Infostud. If you to not have an Infostud account yet, please register here
  2. Navigate to: Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes > Admission to programmes.
  3. Enter the Test Code corresponding to your chosen date (see "Available sessions and booking deadlines" below).
  4. Click Continue and proceed to PagoPA direct payment.
  5. Pay the fee of €19.52 (€16.00 + 22% VAT). Your booking is only confirmed once payment is completed.

Important:

  • ID Upload: A few days before the test, CISIA will email you instructions and a link to upload your ID. This must be completed by 2:00 PM (CET) on the deadline specified in the email.
     
  • External Tests: Sapienza accepts CISIA ITA L2 tests taken at other universities offering the ITA L2 Test as well
     
  • Validity of the test: Sapienza accepts CISIA ITA L2 tests taken from January 1, 2024, and no later than June 30, 2026, provided they are passed with at least 55 points
     
  • Refunds: As per Art. 66 point 1. of the Student Regulations, registration fees are non-refundable under any circumstances.

*Bookings will be closed once the maximum number of seats (100) has been reached for each session, regardless the indicated deadline.
 

Note: All sessions start at 2:30 PM (Italian time). Please log in at least 10 minutes before the start.
If no more seats are available at Sapienza, please refer to the CISIA website for sessions held at other Italian universities taking into account that Sapienza accepts CISIA ITA L2 tests taken from January 1, 2024, and no later than June 30, 2026, provided they are passed with at least 55 points.

Results of the test

Results will be published as soon as they are released by CISIA, usually 72 hours after the test.
