Segreteria studenti internazionali - International student office

International Student Office

Academic Year 2026/2027

Download our Admission procedures - Orientation and information document, it is a useful summary of the main procedures. Then read carefully all information on the present page.

1. Italian language test

Non-EU citizens residing abroad who require a Study Visa must pass a B2-level Italian language test for admission to Sapienza’s degree programmes taught in Italian.

For additional information and to register for the 2026-2027 test, please visit the Italian Language Test for International Students page.

2. Mandatory pre-selection

For specific Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes taught in English or Italian (consult the official list), candidates must complete an online pre-selection via the MoveIN platform to obtain a pre-acceptance letter.

The pre-acceptance letter is:

  • Mandatory for all non-EU citizens residing abroad (see point 6) to complete pre-enrolment and Study Visa procedures on the Universitaly portal.
  • Optional for EU citizens (regardless of residence) and non-EU citizens legally residing in Italy (see point 6).

In the event of a positive pre-selection outcome, candidates must register on Infostud to obtain a student ID number (matricola) and download their pre-acceptance letter.

For further details, please visit the Admission 2026-2027 page.

Please Note: A positive pre-selection outcome does not guarantee enrolment. Pre-selected students must complete all steps outlined in the Call for Applications for their chosen course and submit all mandatory documents (see point 3 for Bachelor’s/Single-cycle degrees and point 4 for Master’s degrees) to the Hello - International Student Office.

The Office will evaluate the eligibility of all submitted qualifications according to the procedures set by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR). Enrolment will not be possible for candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements, even if they have been pre-selected.

Enrolment under reserve: For pre-selected students enrolled pending document submission (this will be possible only for Restricted Access courses), enrolment will be declared null and void if final administrative checks reveal a lack of the required minimum qualifications/requirements.

3. Mandatory documents for enrolment – Bachelor’s degree courses and Single-cycle degree courses

Enrolment Procedures

The enrolment process—including the submission and administrative verification of mandatory documents—will be conducted via an online preliminary procedure.

The Hello - International Student Office will subsequently schedule in-person appointments to perform an in-depth verification of the documents submitted online and confirm their authenticity. Candidates must bring the original hardcopies of all required documents when summoned.

5. Study Visa: Universitaly, mandatory online pre-enrolment for all non-EU students residing abroad

Online pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal is mandatory for all non-EU students residing abroad (see point 6) who require a Study Visa to enter Italy and enrol at Sapienza. If you have not yet registered, please follow this link.

Deadlines and Requirements:

  • Submission Deadline: Pre-enrolment applications must be finalized and submitted by June 30, 2026, at 23:59 (Italian time). This allows the University sufficient time to validate applications before the Embassies/Consulates' deadlines for visa issuance.

  • Diplomatic Mission: During the application, you must select the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. Non-EU citizens residing in a European country must select the Italian mission in that specific country.

  • Documents: To ensure a quick validation, you must upload the complete set of mandatory documents (see here for Bachelor's/Single-cycle, here for Master's, or this link for the Foundation Year). Candidates for courses requiring pre-selection (see point 2) must also upload their mandatory pre-acceptance letter.
    • Note: Incomplete applications will be reopened for integration and will only be validated once all documents are provided. Even if your application is incomplete or missing documents, you must submit it by June 30, 2026, to be eligible for further updates or integrations.

  • Restricted Access Courses: For courses with a numerus clausus (restricted access), the Universitaly application will only be validated if the candidate is among the winners in the official ranking. Please check the Course Catalogue for specific admission calls and deadlines.

After receiving your Study Visa: Upon arrival in Italy, you must apply for a Residence Permit for study purposes within 8 days. For detailed information, please visit the dedicated page. You must send the receipts of your residence permit application to studentistranieri@uniroma1.it along with your enrolment documents.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The validation of a pre-enrolment application does not guarantee the issuance of a Study Visa (which is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Italian Diplomatic Missions) nor does it guarantee university enrolment.

Enrolment is finalized only if the candidate follows all procedures in the Call for Applications and submits all mandatory documents by the set deadline.

In accordance with the official MUR "PROCEDURES FOR ENTRY, RESIDENCY AND ENROLMENT OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND THE RESPECTIVE RECOGNITION OF QUALIFICATIONS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES IN ITALY VALID FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2025-2026" published at the following link, please note that:

  1. No Automatic Right to Visa: Prior acceptance by the university does not grant a right to a visa.
  2. No Automatic Right to Enrolment: Obtaining a visa does not grant an automatic right to enrol. Enrolment is the exclusive jurisdiction of the Higher Education Institution.
  3. Verification of Qualifications: Sapienza must verify the eligibility and authenticity of all foreign qualifications. Prior acceptance does not guarantee enrolment, even if the candidate holds a visa, is physically present in Italy, or has received a scholarship.

Final Note: If Sapienza is unable to complete the enrolment of an international student due to missing requirements, the relevant Diplomatic Mission will be promptly notified for the immediate cancellation of the entry visa.

For additional information regarding the Universitaly portal, please contact accesso.sapienza@uniroma1.it.

6. International students – check your citizenship status

Based on Ministerial regulations, admission and enrolment procedures vary according to your citizenship and residency status. Please identify which of the following categories applies to you.

a. EU Citizens and Equivalent (Non-EU residing in Italy)

You should follow the procedures for “EU citizens and non-EU citizens legally residing in Italy” if:

  • You are a citizen of an EU Member State or of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, San Marino, or Vatican City.
  • You hold dual citizenship, where one is from an EU country.
  • You are a non-EU citizen holding one of the following Italian residence permits:
    • EU residence permit for long-term stay.
    • Residence permit for subordinate work or self-employment.
    • Residence permit for family reasons.
    • Residence permit for asylum, subsidiary protection, or special reasons.
    • Religious reasons.
    • Electronic residence document for UK citizens (Art. 50 TEU – Art. 18.4 of the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement).
  • You are a non-EU citizen who has been a legal resident in Italy for at least one year and you hold an Italian upper secondary school qualification that grants access to your chosen degree programme.
  • You are a non-EU citizen already regularly enrolled in a degree course in an Italian university holding a valid residence permit for study purposes and wish to transfer or change programmes.
    • IMPORTANT: If you are moving to Sapienza from another Italian university and you hold a valid residence permit for study purposes, do not withdraw (rinuncia agli studi) from your current university. Doing so will invalidate your residence permit and you will need to start again with the study visa procedure by going back to your Country. Instead, you must follow the official transfer procedure.
  • You, one of your parents, or your spouse is serving at a Diplomatic/Consular mission or international organization in Italy accredited by the Italian Government or the Holy See.

ATTENTION:

A residence permit for study purposes issued for an Italian language course or an Exchange programme is not valid for university enrolment as an EU-equivalent student. In this case, you must apply for a new Study Visa via Universitaly.
A residence permit for study purposes issued for a “Single course” will be considered valid for university enrolment as a EU-equivalent student just in case all the three following points are met:

  1. You have entered Italy with a study visa released for a single course
  2. You have fully attended and positively passed the single course
  3. The single course is relevant for the degree course you are requiring to be enrolled in.

  • You must apply via the Universitaly portal to obtain a Study Visa. Please refer to point 5.
  • Enrolment is only finalized after completing the admission procedures specified in the Call for Applications for your chosen programme.
  • For restricted access programmes, Sapienza sets a specific quota of reserved places for non-EU students residing abroad. Details are available in the individual Call for Applications and in the dedicated webpage.

15. Pay your tuition fees via PagoPA

For comprehensive information on tuition fees, grants, and exemptions, please consult the dedicated Fees and Benefits page.

Since March 1, 2021, all payments for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes must be made through the PagoPA system.

16. Evaluation methodology of foreign qualifications

To be eligible for admission to a Bachelor’s degree (Laurea), a Single-cycle Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico), or a 2-year Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale), any foreign qualification must be recognized as suitable and comparable to the required Italian qualification.

Legal Framework:

The evaluation process is conducted in accordance with:

Assessment Criteria:

The recognition of qualifications for academic purposes is the exclusive competence of Higher Education Institutions. Sapienza Università di Roma evaluates qualifications based on:

  1. Institutional Status: We verify the accreditation and recognition of the awarding institution, the teaching institution, and the specific study programme within the national education system of reference.
  2. Qualification Validity: Qualifications are considered only if they are officially recognized by the issuing country's education system.
  3. Key Elements: The evaluation takes into account the authenticity of the documentation, the duration and workload of the programme, its level, nature, learning outcomes, and the academic rights it confers in the country of origin.

Substantial Differences:

If a substantial difference is identified between the foreign qualification and the equivalent Italian system, the application may be refused. This precludes access to higher education in Italy or progression to the next academic cycle, even if the candidate has passed an admission test.

In the event of a refusal for a specific course, Sapienza may consider a partial recognition of the qualification through a degree shortening procedure for a lower academic cycle, allowing the candidate to eventually obtain an Italian degree.
